The new reveal of the Dark Sky iOS app and the website
Just over a year ago, Apple announced the acquisition of the popular hyperlocal and also weather app Dark Sky (Dark Sky iOS app). At the time, Apple said that the Dark Sky API, which is used by various third-party weather apps, would be closed by the end of 2021. However, plans have changed and Dark Sky now says its API will be available for a while time frame additional year. The iOS app and website will also be available for one year.
As developer David Smith noted on Twitter, Dark Sky made this change on Monday in a blog update. The company claims that the Dark Sky API will remain available to existing customers until the end of 2022. Apple company has also affirmed that this Dark Sky website and application will also be accessible till the end of 2022.
As above, a new blog post from the developers of the Apple-owned hyperlocal weather app Dark Sky announced that the iOS and web versions of the app, as well as the Dark Sky API, will expire at the end of 2022.
It was no secret that Apple would end up shutting down all of Dark Sky’s apps and web tools after buying the company in 2020, and it looks like there’s finally a firm deadline for this final cut, for the weather service. However, developer David Smith and 9to5Mac have learned that Apple will be shutting down the Dark Sky iOS app, website, and API in “late 2022”. It’s one year after than inherent suggested. But if you’re using the iOS app or any app based on Dark Sky’s updated forecast, you’ll still want to plan for a change.
Apple shut down the Dark Sky Android app in August of last year.
There is no doubt that Dark Sky’s technology will endure. It plays a role in the more detailed iOS 14 weather forecast (although the data comes from The Weather Channel), and iOS 15 will add features like Next Hour Precipitation Alerts. Nevertheless, if you prefer Dark Sky as a device-independent weather tool, closures won’t be thrilling.
Dark Sky had yet to say when iOS and the website would be shut down. When the acquisition was first announced, Apple simply said that “there will be no changes to Dark Sky for iOS at this time.” This week’s update appears to mean that the app could be shut down permanently by the end of 2022.
Since Apple acquired Dark Sky in March 2020, we’ve seen some notable changes to the built-in Weather app on the iPhone. While Apple has been silent on its Dark Sky plans, it is clear that many of these features are possible through the Dark Sky acquisition. But with that said, Apple still uses The Weather Channel for data.
